The Tea Plantation area of Sri Lanka

From Kandy we drove into the mountainous tea producing area around Nuwara Eliya. This had a British colonial feel. The drive was quite slow, 2 lanes either direction with many slow moving vehicles... think tuk tuks! We stopped to check out some waterfalls on the way.........

The old British Post office is still operative in Nuwara Eliya....

and the glue to paste stamps looked as though it had been there since the British left!

Our first place to stay in the area, the Heritance Tea Factory,  a boutique converted tea factory, having been remodeled very recently. It was definitely far from the tourist trail. And was amazing.

Tea leaves were still being picked by hand.......

We were able to see how the tea leaves were dried, etc for the production of tea in the past....

The interior of the tea factory was amazing.......

They had a train carriage as a dining area......

The bedrooms were also superb.....

...with an amazing view........

Our next place to stay was essentially back in colonial times... The Grand Hotel!

We had booked the Presidential suite as the hotel was completely full....a local extra long weekend because of the religious full moon holiday! This also had the negative effect of not allowing wine to be sold in any bar that day!

It was not very comfortable, apart from the beds!

But perhaps the Queen stayed there when she visited!

...afternoon tea was great!

Then on to Ella by train.......

The views from the train were magnificent.........

...And leaning out an open door seemed to be what everyone wanted to do!!
