Negombo, Sri Lanka

Back in January in cold and wet weather a trip to Sri Lanka in October sounded great. So a 2 week trip was booked. 3 months prior to tour date a full tour amount was paid, air travel was booked and  we eagerly awaited going. Imagine our horror to receive an email 3 weeks prior to trip saying that the tour was cancelled due to not enough people going. It was always to be a small group of around 10/12 persons. And as I assumed enough people had signed up by July I had not booked a flexible airfare! So I had to get to work to book hotels, driver/car etc very last minute!

First stop for a few days was close to the Colombo airport which is in Negombo. It was a stay in a 200 year old colonial house.......and it was great! The Wallawwa hotel lived up to its photos online!

While staying there we explored Negombo, first the fish market,.......

If the fish was large it could be chopped for you!

Then the dried fish area....

Then a cruise on the lagoon......

...destroyed and left after  a tsunami...

..

We had our picnic on the boat instead of sitting in muddy water, with potential for crocodile bites!

No leftovers went to waste!

The camouflaged crocodile was not interested!

..but the birds were.......

We opted for lunch in an old colonial house.......Club Ceylon.......

.. before returning to our quiet pool!
