The Cultural Triangle area of Sri Lanka hosts a huge number of wild elephants as well as ruins! We signed up to go on a safari to Minneriya National park. which is supposed to have the most elephants. However on the morning of the safari we had a message to say the elephants had moved on and we now needed to go to an adjacent park, Kaudulla, a little further away. The elephants are free to go wherever they want!
Initially we only saw birds......
... and then the inevitable monkeys.....
And then a herd of water buffalo....
Finally we heard that there had been some elephant sightings!
Then we came to a traffic jam! Elephants definitely had the right of way!
...we were surrounded!
They didn't seem to feel threatened. Nor did we! However it would have been difficult to beat a hasty retreat given the roads!
That evening we felt in need of a little culture.......
...and yes he did walk through the coals!
