On to Fira, Santorini!

We took an early morning ferry from Heraklio..... a catamaran, so it only took 2 hours.
We were sorry to leave Crete but will return.....

On arrival in Santorini it was obvious we were one of the few travelers traveling alone.... most of our companions were day trippers and were given a number for their tour bus, based on language spoken. There were no taxis meeting the boat......so we rented a car........before we knew what the roads were like! We should have looked more closely at the road up from the port...

We headed first of all to the beach areas in the south of the island....rows and rows of sun beds and umbrellas..

We bought a map and then spent lunch working our where to go......

For lunch we went to a fabulous restaurant, Selene....

This restaurant is well worth the trip to Pyrgos in the middle of the island...
Island cherry tomatoes and cucumber....

followed by a mixed seafood plate......

After lunch we decided to walk to the top of the town and admire the view....

We wound our way up..

 the narrow typical streets....

and did make it to the top!

As we had  intended taking a taxi,  I had neglected to ask the hotel how to find them..... even if they had explained it would have been difficult! The road was inaccessible to cars! We finally parked and asked directions!
Our last enquiry was just opposite the hotel......the Aria Lito Mansion in Fira, which was a fantastic choice.

It really was walking distance to everything....
and was a very old mansion which had been in the owners family for generations.
We felt some of the statuary was original!

It has one of the very few flat plots of land in Fira!

Our evening meal was in a local restaurant overlooking the Caldera and we did manage to see a sunset......

Next morning we visited the Archaeological museum and saw some pots 3500 years old!

and some other more recent ones......... but still fairly old!

We also visited the museum which houses copies of the wall paintings found in Akrotiri.

After seeing these wall paintings we knew we had to go to Akrotiri........
