Oia, Santorini continued.........

While in Oia, Santorini, we also ate at another restaurant we can definitely recommend, named 1800.
This is in an old sea captain's mansion....

and the food was excellent.......

although surprisingly close to what we paid for our dining experience at the Katikies..... which was definitely a superior value!! And we didn't have many courses at 1800!

We checked out a few of the pools available to us at the Katakies.....

While experiencing another fabulous sunset.......

And we found a great winery  Domaine Sigalas  close by....

.....now busily trying to find where we can buy Greek wines outside of Greece!

We also went to an unusual Art Gallery, Art Space ......

in a winey which has operated on that spot for 200 years! The art is exhibited in the old wine and raki  making space.....

We were shown where the present day wine is made...

However we were a little taken aback at the 25 euros asked for a wine tasting.... given that we had paid 3 euros at the other!

We did, of course, visit Akrotiri!  Still on the Minoan trail.......

This is Greece's Pompeii!  It has only been found  quite recently and they are still busy excavating. It appears that there had been some signs of volcanic activity 3000+ years ago and people there were able to leave prior to the big blast........ think Atlantis and the island which disappeared!

This is where one of the wall painting we saw in Fira was found....

The Minoans had time to  take their smaller prized possessions but a wealth of items have been so far excavated and removed........
but lots of pots have been left where found....

This gives some idea of the amount of ash which fell....

We had to take an early morning ferry from the Santorini port and then saw the full extent of the cruise ship traffic to the island......

These were all for a Costa cruise ship just off shore...

We noticed that the most people were taking a tour 'Highlights of Santorini' and very few were on the Akrotiri bus!  They don't know what they were missing!
