Drive to Potosi....the old mining capital

The drive to Potosi from Sucre was interesting..........

There were protests in the country because a lot of indigenous Bolivians wanted their old President Morales back in power! He had managed to get re-elected a third time (old Constitution only allowed 2 consecutive terms)... an indirect result of having changed the country name from Republic of Bolivia to the Plurinational State of Bolivia in 2009!  The main road was blocked! So the drive became even more interesting!

This meant a 2 hour detour around the mountains....on a dirt road only wide enough for one car!

We had some interesting manouvers!

.... the road steadily deteriorated!...

The views however were great!

...and in the end our driver did have to pay a toll to pass! Enterprising locals!

We were very happy to finally arrive at our destination! Although held up a little more by some sheep!

We just made it before sunset!

Our destination was the  Hotel Museo Cayara, one of the first haciendas in Bolivia, from around 1557!    Amazing.......

The Mint in Potosi was interesting. At its peak this town was the same size as London!

Cable shadows on almost every building!

Lots of churches......

Cerro Rico the main silver mine in the background!

The old colonial part of Potosi was beautiful in parts..... the outer suburb areas not so great!

The left over slag from the mines.......
