Western Namibia..... a small German enclave in Namibia

The  Sossusvlei sand dunes are very far from any other part of Namibia.... to go to the only other international airport involved traveling once again for most of the day over rolled dirt roads through the very barren scenery of the Nabib desert. The one and only potential stop en route was at Solitaire.....the crossroads with the road from Windhoek!

The trip to the loo was interesting .....

......a little too many cars didn't make it??

.. a little beyond Solitaire we passed over the Tropic of Capricorn.......

On these long road trips loo's are definitely needed.....

We thought the  'ladies' here was a joke..... it wasn't!! The 'gents' was in the trees!! Look carefully!

Our destination was Swakopmund.... a small town on the coast showing a lot of Germanic influence from Colonial times..........

We stayed in the Swakopmund hotel which had been the old railway station...

The town has a lot of German architecture......

...even more evidence of past German occupation was to be seen when we visited the local museum...

This became clearer after looking at an old map......

The local market place was not quite so German.....

We also checked out some different, strange crystals from a local mine......
