Crete......Mochlos, our favorite village!

Mochlos is still relatively unspoiled....... hopefully it will remain so.
It is also decidedly off the beaten track. One drops down from the main highway...hairpin bends for about 5kms!

It is quite a small village with a fantastic number of fish restaurants.  Most of the fish is very locally sourced.
It has no 'bling'....... just food and a laid back ambience....
and this postal box probably represents the total number of persons living there.....

We tried 4 of the restaurants, going back twice to 2 of them.

Our favourite was Dimitris.

The owner grew up in Lausanne, Switzerland but his parents were Greek, so eventually he returned.  His food is excellent, with a lot of flavour.   He speaks French and he had Illy coffee, our favorite!! He told us that he has guests who come all the way from Agios Nikolaos  and Elounda just to eat there. So we felt lucky to be staying so close!

Dimitris restaurant is very small with a covered terrace for eating. However we noticed that he had a few tables at waters edge.......given away by the same tablecloths covering them!

So we had two of our  meals there all on our own.......in a fabulous location.....

Our next favorite place was  Ta Kochilia....

We found the people there were extremely friendly.  They have a main restaurant in front on the old port with all the others, but they also have a back area, opening on the other side which had more a coffee house feel

and they displayed local artists there.....
We ate at Ta Kochilia one evening to fantastic moonlight...

 The food was excellent....

We also went to Taverna Sophia.... again a very friendly owner who also takes people up the mountains on bikes......

Lastly in terms of our rating ....To Bogazi...  on the right in a fantastic location...

with their octopus out to dry.......

This place was the reason we returned to Mochlos.... we had an excellent lunch there last year.
However this year the food wasn't great and neither was the ambience.  They seemed to have a lot of large table groups..... which made the restaurant unpleasantly noisy. Apparently twice a week they have greek music evenings...... but we did avoid those nights.
Presumably they are encouraging groups...... and obviously it is good business for them. However we felt it was not what one expects in a nice small  fishing village!

One place we wanted to stop for  a drink  because of its great location ......... but ran out of time!

The village itself is very small without a lot going on in it.  However it is great for relaxing! They don't have any nice beaches so it is very unlikely to have developers wanting to build large resort complexes....unlike Malia.... which is dreadful!
