Crete.......exploring Rethymno

Rethymno is a very charming old Venetian town with lots to explore .....

We had our first evening meal at a restaurant the Cava d'Oro in the old harbor.

We had a quick peek into their kitchen..... and decided it looked very interesting...

Very fresh fish was brought to us at our table so that we could choose....
And this was to show me that indeed it was alive.....

and then they brought the plate of cooked fish to the table......amazing!.

however I did have to keep avoiding looking at the centerpiece!

Next morning we went to the Archaeological Museum.....small but with  a lot of Larnakes, singular Larnax from Minoan tombs..... beautiful.....

Then we walked around the Fortezza which is huge!

It was rather hot so we kept looking for trees for shade but there weren't many....

..... but we did stay inside the Mosque for a while.....

The views were superb.

We then went to the Museum of Contemporary Art.....
it was interesting....just!

For lunch we chose a restaurant  with a view over the bay..... the one with the white umbrellas .....

and it was difficult to work out its name...... it was only written in Greek.

We thought we should check out the shops.....only to find that they close for a very long lunch hour, opening again in the evening.

So back to the hotel to find out where we would be for the night.....this was when we discovered our luggage had been placed in an apartment overlooking the Rimondi fountain, on every tour groups list of 'places to see' ! Very noisy!! Just behind the brown shutters....  definitely not for us!

Dinner later was in the Avli restaurant which is in a beautiful courtyard.... where we also had breakfast.

 The food was excellent.....

except for my main course which just didn't work!
So I left it, something I am rarely tempted to do! They did come to enquire what was wrong....... it had a lot of cheese on top of the pork which just did not enhance it!

Dessert however was great......
