Crete......Kerasia to Chania.... through the Amari Valley....

As we were south of Heraklion it seemed a shame not to go through the mountains to Chania, rather than going back to Heraklion and taking the much quicker National Road.....

We had read that the Amari Valley was worth a trip......

So we went around Mount Psiloros through small villages and ended up in Thronos for lunch.

The Aravanes restaurant/hotel there had superb views over the valley

and indeed the lunch we had there was very good.  The owner had a lot of herbal teas ( herbs  collected by him in the mountains) and he particularly recommended the Ditanny tea which seemed to work wonders  for all ailments.... but he didn't mention that it could be an aphrodisiac!

We liked his tractor......

and it was obviously grape picking time in the Amari valley.....

And also pomegranate time!

After our lunch we continued on to see the Arkadi Monastery....

Then on to Chania to check into our  rental at the Kores villas.......

which was built into the city walls.....

This was an old village home which had been restored a few years ago, retaining as much as possible of the old.....

Which did mean going backwards down to the lower level room....not a lot of headroom! Yes..... that is a bed at the bottom!

And the open bathroom was interesting...... open essentially to the living area........ its at the top of the spiral staircase!

The original plan was a little different and did seem to plan to have a door!!!

However the location was excellent!

Our evening dinner was spent, off the tourist track, by the sea.......at the Thalasino Agheri restaurant..

where we enjoyed very fresh fish and a fantastic sunset!
