Having spent an amazing time in Colombia it was now time to move on! To Central American countries, starting in the city of San Salvador.
This is an easy flight via Panama from Cartagena.
We passed over what looked like it should be the Panama canal.... but more likely the Miraflores outlet to the Pacific!
On arrival we checked into our booked hotel, the Barcelo.... a little 60s American in decor!
The following day we went to Joya de Ceren.....what they term their Pompei!
Not quite! But it was interesting.
The downtown area is no longer old Colonial Spanish... just a tired central plaza with some buildings around it....
it did have a very unusual church on one side of the plaza......
We visited the church where Fr Oscar Romero ( no photos allowed!).... was assassinated. No one has ever been brought to trial for it... but it is suspected that it was set up by rich people who didn't like the social reform he was advocating.
We went out that evening to try some pupusas......great!
and given a demonstration........ just in case we wanted to make some at home!
