Going to the Tonle lake looked like a good alternative to seeing more temples! And so we went.
It actually wasn't that close……because of the road!
Lots of very slow traffic…..
and every now and again having to stop to help get someone back on the road…..
On arrival the boats looked as though they had been in service for quite a while…….
But we started out…. with a faceless masked driver!
passing, en route, a fisherman……. standing to catch fish in very muddy water!
Apparently when the lake floods it changes from being 1 meter deep to 9 meters deep……and so the houses are all built on stilts ….at a high level….…….
…... the school was also very high off the ground….
It was early March…….and this is when marriages happen in the area…..
…... even on a lake!
It was interesting seeing the various types of housing …….
Just before we got to the actual lake we saw the mangrove forest which seems to be underwater all the time……
We did get out of the boat to walk through the Kompong Phluk village….
our first glimpse of their life was of someone mending the battery power……..very little electricity to the village and what there is….. was way too expensive for them!
This village economy is based on dried shrimps….
presumably trapped in these nets, of which there seemed to be large numbers….
…...they are first dried on the village streets..…
then the shells are sorted through to remove grit and broken shells ...….
The village did have a school which taught english on a volunteer basis……
and it did have its own barber shop!
we were amazed at the steep ladder/stairs to all the homes..…
but obviously the young take it in their stride…..
I was ready to race over if she fell!! There was no adult in sight!
