Of course we couldn't leave Cambodia without seeing some more temples! The Rolous group are actually the oldest temples in the area and I had thought it might be a good idea to see them. Particularly as they were in the Tonle Sap area. Because of the constant flooding in the area, during the Monsoon season, it was decided after just a few years to move the Khmer capital to Siem Reap and the Mountain temple Bakheng (where we had enjoyed watching a sunset) was then built….
First we visited Bakong…….
This was built in 881 on 5 levels,…..
we again decided we did not need to climb the steep steps to look at the view…. 35+ degrees C and very humid!
but we did check out the steps at ground level…..
They need a little repair…..but the door lintels are not far away……
lots of lions are still there……
but we had a problem identifying the elephants...…
Then on to Preah Ko…built in 880….
again lots of lions….
and beautiful doorways…….
The king's false doorway at the back of his temple was not in great condition….….
with the lintel on the ground….
but it did have a typical Hindu doorstep……
The front door was however in beautiful condition…..
The lions were still there, in almost perfect condition, guarding the temple……..
as were the oxen……… the name of the temple means "Sacred Oxen'…..
We spied some children playing in front of one of the doorways…..
obviously quite at home there……. exchanging stickers!
We did find an excellent restaurant nearby! Overlooking the muddy river…...
We tried a local stir fried fish dish which was excellent, and a Cambodian dish 'Amok'... fish served(and cooked?) in a Coconut.
The Steung Trorcheak Restaurant…… worth a stop going to / of returning from Tonle Sap.
