Modica is also a 2 part city, with an upper part and a lower part.....like Ragusa... the lower part having been rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake.
We were staying in the upper part and once we got there we had no desire to go out again in the car...
Think ......very very narrow streets!
This one says no entry except residents......I don't think anyone else would be in the least tempted!
Parking on them could be hazardous ....
as seen on this car ,which lost its side mirror......
We gave the key of our car into the hotel's hands....thankfully!
We walked up to a view point ... passing by some large Palazzos en route, many ready to be renovated....
The view point did give a great overview of the city....
Looking down......
and later on looking back up!
Modica is famous for chocolate so we had to visit one chocolate maker....
the Antica Dolceria Bonajuto seems to be on all visitors lists of places to see!
It is nice......
it is just opposite the Duomo of the lower town......
We were interested to see that the part under the steps was being put to good use!
with a nice choice of wines.......
We also checked out the Duomo of the upper town......
and many of the other 100 churches in both towns.....
Near this one we noticed that all the local male population seemed to be outside..... however there was a mass going on and the church seemed to be full!
The hotel we were staying in, the Palazzo Failla, had a Michelin starred restaurant, La Gazza Ladra and they were offering a special price for hotel guests....
I had read however that the chef had moved to Taormina so presumably it may no longer be Michelin rated. Not sure if this is accurate......but in any case we had decided to eat just down a small lane in a restaurant that the hotel used to run and indeed the building houses some of their hotel rooms.
From my point of view it is definitely worth paying a little extra to be assured of a room in the main house...... which is beautiful and has been in the same family for years and was only made into a hotel 8 years ago.
The food was excellent in the Locanda del Colonnello........
Bread in a bag.......and the smell was delicious when opened.....
starters......
this is 'street food'.....it was fun opening it up to see what one got.......
It had been ordered to check out the Arancine...... how could we not when Detective Montalbano was pushing them around town!
Then sardines......
and pork......
all dishes were excellent.
Breakfast at the Palazzo Failla was also excellent......perhaps one of the best we have ever been offered...
A first! Chocolate mousse for breakfast...... we didn't resist.......
and the owner of the hotel returned our car to us.....parking it very carefully between the flower pots!
