On the Minoan trail, Crete......continued

On our way to Elounda we visited Knossos... and were happy that we had seen  the other Minoan sites first.

It has been extensively restored, much to the dismay of many archeologists! However for me, in any case, it made it  extremely easy to imagine how the Minoans might have lived

This is the so called Throne room.....where they think it likely a Priestess may have sat....
Were the benches for those queuing up to be purified??

in the ritual purification area just opposite the throne.....

And perhaps this was the viewing room above.....

Here again there were lots of Pithoi ( amphoras)

and some giant ones.....2-3 meters high!

Apparently the first Palace there was destroyed in 1600BC, presumably when the volcano at Santorini erupted. What one sees today dates in general from 1400BC!
It is absolutely amazing and definitely worth the trip.......even if just for the day from a cruise ship!!

We drove on to the Elounda peninsula.... just about an hour away. Nothing takes long on the north side of the island.  We had booked into the Blue Palace  and were rather taken aback when we rounded a corner and saw it for the first time.

It is a huge complex!! 220 rooms!  And we prefer small!
However our initial negative feeling became subdued after we settled into our room.....

And started enjoying the pool .....
 and the views.....
