On to the Sahara desert!

 Leaving Djerba we went to Matmata to check out its troglodyte houses...... this meant driving over high mountain passes with little or no vegetation....the Mediterranean is there in the background!

We did pass a few small villages.......

... not an easy life.......

... then we arrived at the OTT village of Matmata..... one of the  main Star Wars sites in Tunisia....

We were not alone! A lot of tourists sign up for Star War tours!

... you can actually sleep there!

Lunch was in a troglodytic house.... holes are dug down into the earth to construct them........

Then on to our destination for the night...a tent in the Sahara near Douz, where all roads end on the edge of the desert.... 

Here  we had to change over into 4X4s to reach our camp for the night.... it was in a remote part of the desert.  How remote we didn't know until we got there! We stopped for a tea after 45 minutes......thinking we were almost there, we wondered why we needed tea!

Then we realized we had another 45 minutes off road.......over the sand dunes!

I was not really happily anticipating this night in a tent as I am not a happy camper! 

So I was happy to see it was closer to glamping than camping!

We watched a sunset.....

.. and then the rise of a full moon........

Our food had been cooking in the sand for quite a few hours........

Next morning we did have to again brave the 45 minute ride over the sand dunes! No GPS!!
