Mercado de Bazurto, Cartagena

A visit to a local market is always extremely interesting and the market here was no different!

The Mercado de Bazurto is not on the most popular tours in Cartagena.... it is outside the walled city, a little difficult to get to and we were warned NOT to bring any valuables! Indeed no money! So basically no tourists there!

This market used to be in the center just outside the walled city. However it had a fire and had to be ousted from its prime site..... where the  Convention center has now been built. One wonders!

On arrival we were immediately thrown into the fish section.... fresh off the boat and in the open air!

Lots of fish.......

...and some were still alive!

After this we got to move inside the actual semi covered market to check out the cooked fish. Maybe after being in the sun too long!

Their means of cooking was interesting....

we didn't feel tempted to try the restaurant!
The Colombians use a lot of herbs in cooking.....the vendor did tell us what each herb was best used for.

The fruit section had great fruit.........

The vegetables were also great.....

It was however a little tight getting around!

Poor chicks! We didn't wait around to find out what their fate might be!
