The Attractions of Fez

We obviously could not come to Fez without having a list from Eyewitness Morocco to check off!
So we visited in no particular order.....
The Fondouk el-Nejjarine and its elegant fountain....

No photos allowed....but it was very interesting!

The Karaouiyine Mosque......
This is closed to non Muslims but we were not prevented from looking down on it......

nor from looking in the open door as we passed by.....slowly!

What I really liked about the Karaouiyine Mosque/University/Library was that it had been funded and started by a woman in 859!....... Fatima El Fihri, whose wealthy father from Tunisia left her a large inheritance.

Then on to the El Atttarine Medersa...

Ad of course no visit to the Fez Medina would be complete without visiting the Tanners Quarter, specifically the Chouara area.....

After leaving the Medina we visited the King's Palace gate.....

and the Mellah, the Jewish quarter...... with windows looking onto the street!

and then we needed to get back to where we were staying to experience our first Hammam!!

This was definitely an experience!  Very hot water, then cold water thrown over one! Then lathered with Black soap and essentially loofah-ed!
Possibly better than the alternative colors!

And afterwards a massage........ really great!
Definitely to be recommended! Happily it was in the hotel.....afterwards one looked like a drowned rat!

Our evening dinner was booked because of an article written in the Sunday Times about a long weekend in Fez......
It recommended eating at NUR a new restaurant where the chef had trained at the French Laundry in Napa and El Bulli! How could we ignore!!
So we booked and went.......
It was definitely an interesting, albeit expensive experience!

I think it was 7 courses...but quite honestly we lost count! But the coffee was great!

The restaurant itself was very interesting......

There was no menu! Nor was there a wine menu, and wine was only sold per glass......at an unknown price per glass! And it was not inexpensive!
Would we go again if we were staying on in Fez? Probably not! But it was definitely an unexpected experience! And most of the courses served were to our taste and excellent!
