St Pierre, Martinique

After abandoning the boat two days early in St Pierre we had now 2 extra days in the St Pierre area and so decided to explore......
First we went to the Jardin de Balata....

This was definitely worth a visit......

and the surrounding views were superb......

We did actually try another restaurant in St Pierre, Le Fromager, much recommended on TripAdvisor.
However it was only open at lunchtime.... and was definitely not walking distance to the hotel!
It has a fantastic view.....

and was definitely worth visiting, for that.......

I had the Feroce d'Avocat in order to avoid the daily dose of Accras!

We also visited the Depaz Rum Distillery... this was totally destroyed in the eruption of Mount Pelee but one family member escaped and 30 years later they were again producing rum....... however it is still within reach of the volcano........

This was very interesting as we got to see how rum is made......I had no idea!

We also went to Anse Couleuvre at the very end of the west side ( leeward, I have now learnt!) of the island.  The last km was so potholed we didn't think we could make it...there or back!!  We had wanted to stay at the hotel  but it was undergoing renovation when we tried to book. Thankfully!  We would never have left it while there! And three days there without going out might have been a little boring.....despite the tranquility! And now that I see the translation, (google!...so may not be accurate!!) 'couleuvre' translates as 'snake'!  As I grew up in Ireland I have a phobia about snakes!!  I would not have been a happy camper!
We heard that the prior owner, Manon Tardon, had a Winchester which she used..... to try to stop drug smugglers arriving from Dominica in her cove!  And also apparently to shoot snakes!!The Habitation has been in the same family for generations.....
