Samode Haveli, Jaipur

From the Palace we went to the Samode Haveli within the walls of the Old City of Jaipur, owned by the same family for several centuries.
This is a delightful place to stay. The front courtyard is where everything happens.....

We were given the Haveli suite which was very spacious......

With a claw-foot bath...

And it even had its own small courtyard...................

However the area immediately outside its gates leaves a lot to be desired.  We did not emerge on foot!  However I doubt we would have been tempted to do so in any other hotel either! Jaipur is chaotic in terms of traffic..... we saw camels pulling carts, decorated elephants around a main roundabout, overfull buses, and of course the major people mover, the autorickshaw known there as the Tuk-Tuk!

First night there we went for dinner at the Rambagh Palace. This was our first encounter with the tight security to enter hotels which might be terrorist targets. Hood and boot were opened and a mirror was passed underneath the car before we were allowed to go past the barrier.  Then to actually enter the hotel we had to go through a screening process... like at an airport.
However it was worth it!  We had dinner in the Suvarna Mahal dining room and it was a superb room....

This dining room was the one used in the Maharaja's time for formal dinners. It could seat 80 at one long table and all were served by 80 servants ,so that everyone was served at the same time. Silverware was gold in those days. Nowadays it is just gold plated!

Surprisingly they did not make us go through the metal detectors on the way out.

And the food was excellent........

Highly recommend both places. On the expensive side, though!
