I had read about a new archaeological site Caral, only discovered relatively recently...
which has been shown to be the oldest civilization found in the Americas....to date....... at around 5000 years old it is actually from around the same era as the Egyptian pyramids!
So I set about arranging to see it......
I went with Caraltours........which I can throughly recommend! Its a long drive...about 200kms.... but the slowest part was getting out of Lima! Lima now has a population of around 11million.... I think we passed where half of them were living! All the surrounding hills were covered.......
The last 20kms is on a dirt road......and when fairly close we came to a junction where we were told that the main way of getting in was flooded and we had to take an alternative route... which meant also traversing the river!
About 32 pyramids have been somewhat uncovered so far on this site....some more uncovered than others! However en route I had other sites pointed out to me........it seems the Supe river valley was a very populated area 4 to 5000 years ago.......
First view........
The area is totally bleak..... one has to assume that before global warming they had the ability to grow crops there! Actually the Supe river runs behind the pyramids....... and that was the source of their crop cultivation......
Walking round one appreciates the size of the archeological site.....
and the amount of work which still needs to be done is impressive. Several pyramids have been somewhat reconstructed....
others will take time......
This is an amphitheater with great acoustics!
and right beside it were structures which they think were shops.....
After a very hot tour of the area we started back towards Lima, stopping en route at another site also found relatively recently, Bandurria
Here there were two pyramids quite well excavated.... and a few awaiting their turn!

They also even had a drainage system......
