Moulay Idriss and Volubilis

After an early start and a morning walking around Meknes we were ready for lunch!
Always looking for interesting places to lunch I found a place in Moulay Idriss, with a distant view to Volubilis. Moulay Idriss was intriguing to me as non muslims were not allowed to stay in the city until about 10 years ago!

First place I tried was the Scorpion House...owned by the person who owns the Clock Cafe in Fez. However his return email quoted a price of 60 euros each......which I found a little surprising!! It turned out that he would have had to open up the house just for us!
So I reserved at Dar Zerhoune.... at 15 euros each!

..... which was a little challenging to find!

Turned out the owner was from New Zealand but was dividing her time between Morocco and Ireland, specifically Carlow!! Quite a difference in terms of climate and culture!
It was basically a tapas style lunch with a very good Vin Gris. We had never come across Vin Gris before  coming to Morocco but definitely approve! The Meknes/Volubilis area is one of the largest wine areas in Morocco.
We had a great view from her terrace, and the food was excellent! Definitely recommend!

After a very relaxing lunch we set off for Volubilis.... not well planned by me as it was about 40 degrees C! However there was no backing down nor coming another day!

Here we were not alone.....it is obviously on the tourist track!
This was a thriving Roman city from AD 45. And of course, as the Romans also liked wine, grapes were probably in the area before the French arrived!

The House of Orpheus was our first stop and was being worked on while we were there.. but that did not prevent us seeing its mosaics.....particularly the more unusual circular one...

then on to the Forum

and the Basilica

We then visited the Athletes House and saw the mosaic of the Chariot Jumper.....

and the Triumphal Arch...

with the Decumanus Maximus leading from the Triumphal Arch....

..to the Tangier Gate...

There were quite a number of  aristocratic residences.
The House of Columns.....

Beautiful intact mosaics at the House of the Four Seasons....Autumn at the right!

Then onto the House of the Labours of Hercules...again intact mosaics...

Then lastly to the Gordian Palace, again with intact mosaics......

I have to admit that I had no idea, before researching Morocco, that it had any Roman ruins!

Back in Fez later that evening we had to be led once again through the Medina to another restaurant....this time to the Dar Roumana...... before we arrived in Fez I had no idea of distances within the medina ...this time it was about 20mins uphill to get there!

Food was good... but not memorable...we rather regretted not having changed it to somewhere closer!
