A Five Day market at Inle Lake

We had read about the 5 day rotating markets around the lake and wanted to experience one. We love visiting markets and seeing different foods. There was one at Shwenyaung, half way down the lake, our second day there…… so off we went.

This was quite a different market.  For a start everyone arrives by boat….quite a traffic jam!

One has to walk across to the market on a very bouncy bamboo bridge...

This was a huge market…….souvenirs for the tourists at the edge…..

We penetrated deep inside to see everything else on sale for the locals……

Here is the rotating dentist, who actually wasn't really a dentist but had worked in a dental practice in Mandalay for a while…..
You can order a set of false teeth and he will bring them back in 5 days time……..

and for the past few years he has even had an electric drill…...

Next door was a barber shop…..presumably one  choses  a style from the wall  posters...
Then there is the area where people take any sewing they need done…..

even a hardware store….note the solar panels. A lot of the villages do not yet have electricity!

….a blacksmith…..
and wood and bamboo kindling  for sale…
and water containers…..

This lady is selling the betel leaf….chewed by every male there…and we were told a family selling betel was very rich!
 lots of flowers..
and of course fruits and vegetables….

these are small aubergines(eggplants) that they eat raw…we tried one and decided its an acquired taste..

and the tofu cracker which is a Shan speciality….

and of course there was fish from the lake……some still alive…..

and some were dried…..

after we saw this pig we were disinclined to have any food there……
even though there were quite a few eating places……

We opted to go to a more western oriented restaurant!
So back in the boat to go to the Green Chilli  nearby, in Nampan village……

excellent Tea leaf salad

followed by some fish……which had probably been alive at the market earlier on..

and washed down with a surprisingly good local wine from the Red Mountain Winery.

Can definitely recommend this restaurant!
