The nearest archeological site was right on our doorstep... Mochlos island. To get over there one just asks one of the restaurants to call the boatman and he arrives within 15mins........
Leaving the port we had a great view of the tavernas.....
and the view back to Mochlos from the island was great......our place is in the middle of the hill, near the top, to the right of the bourgainvilla. It was only a 5-10 min walk down to the restaurants, a little more going back up!
To do the return journey from the island we had to ring the church bell on the island when ready!
We had to hope he would return as we were the only ones there..... and although one of us had no problem swimming over..... some of us preferred to ride in a boat!
The return journey was no problem.......... the boatman did indeed come to the island jetty when the bell tolled.....
We enjoyed a lunch at the Taverna Ta Kochilia ........
Apparently in Minoan times there was a causeway across from the mainland..... and we were probably sitting right on top of it when eating in the restaurants!
We went next to Zakros..........
This was much larger and had a palace on the site.
and a treasury.....
It was actually undergoing excavation while we were there.......... something we did not see anywhere else!
The old road from Minoan times was fairly obvious........3000+ years old!
As were the menacing caves just above the site..... this is the Valley of the Dead.... we were not tempted!
The wells/bathing places were still well supplied with water......
but now just used by the turtles!
There were quite a number of restaurants on the beach.... and we chose this one because it had tables on the beach!
Next site was Palekastro...... this was just left open to enter, no-one there to guard it!
This is the site where the Palekastro Kouros was found......
... some of the more important finds in Lassithi are on view in the Sitia Archeological Museum. We had been to see it en route.
Actually this was one of the best museums on the island.....it did not look too inviting from the outside but was extremely well organized and gave a lot of information on where the artifacts were found.
We alaso passed by Vai beach.......too many people even off peak season
there is a quieter one at Itanos..... which Mark Anthony gave to Cleopatra......
and the Toplou Monastery on the return journey. Their wine was good!
The roads in that part of the island are somewhat challenging so we decided that we would check out all on the same day!!

In prior years apparently US students came to work on the dig....... this year, unfortunately no-one came!

Unfortunately not much left of the city today!
